Overview

The refreshed National Gallery Singapore (the Gallery) is a new visual arts institution situated in the heart of the city’s civic district. Created by combining two beautifully restored and transformed heritage landmarks – the former Supreme Court and City Hall buildings – the Gallery houses the largest public collection of modern art in Southeast Asia. The Gallery is dedicated to collaborative research, education and exhibitions, and presenting modern Southeast Asian art to the rest of the world.

Pico was deeply involved in this historic project on several levels. We were tasked with delivering interior fit-out services during the Gallery’s renovation, and event managing the launch of the new Gallery. This launch included the celebratory Art Carnival held on the Padang, a massive open field in the centre of the city.

Fitting out the interiors for this incredible space was a massive and intricate task. Taking over two years, this long journey had an important mission: to display the largest public collection of modern art in Southeast Asia. We began our work with space planning for the Gallery, focusing on optimising the flow of space between interior and exterior environments in both the private and public areas.
